Carl Friedrich Abel - Six Sonatas for Two Violas da Gamba from The Countess of Pembroke’s Music Book.

*** This best selling collection of Sonatas is now in its third edition ***

These are not the six easy sonatas that have been readily available from other publishers (e.g. Barenreiter Hortus Musicus 39) for some years. They are from the relatively little known collection of Elizabeth Pembroke, wife of the 10th Earl Pembroke. Elizabeth was a pupil of Abel and these sonatas have a valuable didactic content. The simple bass accompaniment was probably intended for an instrument other than a keyboard – most likely another gamba, but was otherwise unspecified. The sonatas are some of the most attractive examples of Abel's pre classical or ‘galant’ style. More information is included in the preface to the edition. Score and separate parts. (solo & basso)

Joseph Fiala (1748-1816) - Sonata in G major & Concertino in D major, for Viola da Gamba, Violin, & ‘Cello, with optional harpsichord continuo.

Edited and realized by Dr David J Rhodes.

Two works from the late viola da gamba repertoire. Fiala was a close friend of the Mozart family and Kapellmeister to Prince Fürstenberg. The Sonata is in three movements and the Concertino in four. The Concertino in D in particular provides many opportunities for showy virtuosic displays on the gamba, and in one bar utilizes an arpeggio on harmonics well above the end of the fingerboard. Despite the extrovert nature of these compositions, the gamba part in both pieces remains very practical to play.
